| Turok 2: Seeds of Evil Movie: How to use the Warblade to make Compys a little more compact. October 12, 1998 18:00 A lone Kiowa warrior quietly prowls through the thickets of the jungle. A faint drum beat is heard in the distance. The sweltering heat creates a blanket of mist that shrouds the muddy ground. Clutching the biggest chain gun on the planet, our hero stops in his tracks and holds his breath. Quiet. Suddenly the earth vibrates. A loud thud. Another. Sitting safely at home staring at your TV, you notice your controller vibrates with the rhythm of the heavy, thundering footsteps. Something big is coming your way. You are Turok. Welcome back to the Lost Lands. Last year when it debuted Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the N64, Acclaim and the games developer, Iguana Entertainment, knew they had a hit on their hands. Starting development on Turok 2 was really a no-brainer. Making it better? That's what Iguana is reaching for right now. The story so far: The Campaigner is dead. (Remember, you killed him in Turok 1 -- hopefully without the help of a cheat code). A long, long time ago, a spaceship crashed on Earth. Its cargo, an army of alien warriors headed by the nastiest villain yet, Primagen. Although he is trapped inside his ship, Primagen manages to send out his army of creatures and and turns dinosaurs into deadly killing machines. Like its predecessor, Turok 2 will be a first-person shooter based on Acclaim's comic-book series -- but with less emphasis on jumping and more on action and exploration than Turok 1. This time around, it also will be necessary to go back into certain levels look for more items (Talismans) and open up new passages, making for a better, less linear adventure. The graphics engine also has been radically enhanced. Acclaim promises smooth framerates, incredible, eye-popping effects (if youve seen Turoks explosions, you know this is no idle threat), and advanced realtime lighting effects. In addition to working on eliminating Turoks biggest problem, the fog, Iguana is using "soft-skinned" characters that don't show polygon seam lines (like in NFL Quarterback Club). Even better, Iguana has implemented an additional graphics mode that can be activated if the much talked-about 4MB RAM expansion is installed. With the additional 4MBs, players can switch the whole game to hi-res (640x480) or a slightly faster hi-res letterbox mode. The multiplayer modes can also be played in hi-res. Take our word for it, the graphics are amazing. The game will we packed full with more than 40 different creatures, ranging from the nasty jumping Leapers to the giant dinosaurs. If youve played Turok, you probably remember that there were different sizes of Leapers -- like the smaller, young ones and the tougher male ones that could be a real pain in the butt. Turok 2 continues that tradition with a more varied cast, adding different outfits and weapons to its "intelligent" enemies that evade projectiles and hide behind objects. And yes, Turok 2 will have a four-player multiplayer mode, like Rares crowd-pleaser GoldenEye, as well as Rumble Pak compatibility, letting you feel every T-Rex footstep and the kick-back of Turoks guns. Outlook With an epic soundtrack that puts every other Acclaim game to shame, the cartridge size is clocking in at 256 megabits (32MB), four times as large as Turok 1 (which was 64 megabits). Combined with new compression routines that can fit 40% more data into the cart, Turok 2 promises to become one huge adventure. Its already one of the most anticipated games of 98 here at IGN, and could possibly give GoldenEye a run for its money -- or trample it into the ground like a prehistoric fly. Look for more on Turok 2 soon.
